Artemis Fowl Series: Eoin Colfer

Artemis Fowl a nefarious 12 year old criminal mastermind, and scion of a wealthy and feared family, tangles with fairies in order to make the ultimate score but these aren't the fairies you heard about in the nursery. What results is a rollicking roller coaster adventure that owes more to Die Hard than to the brothers Grimm. With a bit of attitude borrowed from the Percy Jackson school of myth re-invention.

As with any NY Times best seller aimed at the youth market, this book will be loved by some and loathed by some. It is a fast paced and funny story with a reinvented mythos that makes for some snarky reading and in addition there's a secret encoded message that marches across the bottom of every page. But there is a certain word-smithing missing. If you check the quotes for this book, unlike many other YA novels, this one has very few quotes that have a stand-alone value.

If you enjoy roller coasters, by all means, check this one out and like many roller coaster you may get some unique viewpoints unavailable from anywhere else but by the end of the ride, you end up pretty much back where you started.

The 39 Clues Series: The First Four Books

Book 1: The Maze of Bones

The Maze of Bones is the first book in the series. It was published on September 9th, 2008, and was written by Rick Riordan. It covers the death of Grace Cahill and the aftermath of her will. It also introduces the characters, mostly the seven teams that take the challenge to find the 39 Clues. All of them except Amy and Dan are either very rich and powerful, or famous. Every team gets the first Clue of the 39 Clues, but it is hidden in the code "Resolution". Grace's mansion is burned down by the Holts in an attempt to stop Amy and Dan. Also, a sonic detonator explosion made by the Holts injures the Starling triplets, forcing them to withdraw from the race. To find the second clue, Amy and Dan learn about Benjamin Franklin, and go to Paris, France. There, they break into a Lucian stronghold, and Irina Spasky sets a trap to kill them, but they escape. They also discover that they need to go to the Paris Catacombs. There, they find directions to the location of the next Clue, hidden in a group of bones in the shape of a Magic Box, which is a version of Sudoku. These directions tell Amy and Dan to go to a church, where they find a vial of liquid that is wrapped in a page of Mozart's music. The Kabras steal the vial, but Amy and Dan have the sheet of music. Mozart lived in Vienna, Austria, so they book train tickets to go there. They also find out what the first Clue really is. The clue is Iron Solute.

                Book 2: One False Note

One False Note is the second book of the series. It is written by Gordon Korman and was released on December 2, 2008. In it, Amy, Dan, and their au pair, Nellie, have to learn about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to search for the next Clue. First they go to Vienna, Austria, where they steal a diary from Jonah Wizard. Then they go to Salzburg, Austria, where they see The Man in Black. Later, they go to Venice, Italy, where they break in to a Janus stronghold, and steal some valuable pages from there. They eventually end up in a mansion belonging to Fidelio Racco, a friend of Mozart and fellow Janus. There, they encounter the Kabras, but defeat them. Then they find the second Clue, and two ancient Japanese swords. Because of that, Amy and Dan book a flight to Japan to search for the third Clue. The clue is Tungsten.

                              Book 3: The Sword Thief

The Sword Thief is the third book in the series. It was written by Peter Lerangis and was released on March 3, 2009. In the book, Amy and Dan track the life of one of the world's most fearsome warriors in Tokyo, Japan, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in a bid to uncover whether he is a Cahill, and if he possessed a Clue. Alistair Oh, on some unknown promise that he kept to Amy and Dan's parents, helps them. They also make an alliance with Ian and Natalie Kabra. Later, they go to Korea where they find the third Clue, gold. The Kabras try to kill Amy, Dan, and Alistair by trapping them inside a mountain. Amy and Dan escape, thinking that Alistair had died, but he somehow escapes. Amy and Dan then figure out that the next clue is in Egypt. In this book, Amy and Dan also discover what the main Cahill secret is: the philosopher's stone.

                             Book 4: Beyond the Grave

Beyond The Grave, written by Jude Watson, is the fourth book, and was released on June 2nd, 2009. It is about how Amy and Dan try to find an Ekaterina Clue left by the Ekaterina branch founder, Katherine Cahill. The setting of the story is Egypt, and in it, Dan and Amy learn about female pharaohs and goddesses. They discover how the Clues corrupt even the most brilliant Cahills and question Grace's love for them when they discover a secret Ekaterina stronghold at an Egyptian hotel that they were staying in, the Hotel Excelsior. Along the way, Grace's best friend, Hilary Vale, gives Amy and Dan several items from Grace. They discover that Grace is helping them find the next Clue. Amy and Dan work together with Alistair at the end of the book to reach the original location of the Clue, which is underwater. But they discover that the Clue has been stolen by the Madrigals. Alistair leaves Amy and Dan to look at books at his library. Then Amy and Dan realize that Grace didn't want them to go to the original location of the Clue, but to a store in Cairo. There, they receive a picture of a leaf. Then they go back to the Hotel Excelsoir, the hotel which is the location of the Ekaterina stronghold. There, they discover what the Clue is. The book ends with Amy and Dan finding the Ekaterina stronghold destroyed by the Madrigals, and the place where Amy and Dan are headed next is not revealed.

The Hunger Games Trilogy: Last Book: The Mockingjay

After being rescued by the rebels of District 13, Katniss is convinced to become "the Mockingjay": a symbol of the rebellion against the tyrannical Capitol. As part of the agreement, she demands that the leader of District 13, President Coin, grant immunity to all of the Quarter Quell participants, including Peeta, and that Katniss reserves the right to kill President Snow, the dictator of Panem. Much to her displeasure, she is kept away from the battles, and is instead tasked with starring in rebel propaganda films. Katniss is unable to cope with the guilt as she watches a mentally ill Peeta on television, as he is forced to speak out against her and the rebels on behalf of the Capitol. Finally, District 13 leaders decide to rescue Peeta, realizing that Katniss's guilt is impeding her role as "the Mockingjay." After the rescue, it is discovered that Peeta has been brainwashed into believing Katniss is the enemy, and he attempts to strangle her during their reunion. Peeta's brainwashing deeply disturbs Katniss, but he gradually improves after much treatment and therapy. His childhood friend Delly Cartwright helps with his recovery by recounting happy events from their past. Soon, Peeta recovers fully enough to train. Katniss and her propaganda unit are sent off on a mission to the Capitol, and President Coin later sends Peeta with them in replacement of another soldier, although his many scarred memories fuel his rage.
The rebels, including Katniss, gain control of the districts and begin an assault on the Capitol. A propaganda shoot in a purportedly safe Capitol neighborhood goes wrong, and Katniss and her team flee further into the city with the intent of finding and killing President Snow. Many members of Katniss's team are killed during intense urban warfare, including Hunger Games victor Finnick Odair. Eventually, Katniss presses on alone towards Snow's mansion, which has supposedly been opened to shelter Capitol children, but is actually intended to trap them and use them as human shields for President Snow. As she reaches the mansion, a hover plane with Capitol markings drops supply parachutes to the children which then explode, killing many of them. A rebel medical team, including Katniss's sister, Prim, attempts to provide care to the wounded children as the rest of the parachutes explode, killing Prim and many others. The death of her sister traumatizes the already mentally exhausted Katniss, and she falls into a deep depression.
After the rebels' victory, President Coin and her inner circle decide to punish the Capitol just as the Capitol once punished the Districts, by holding a final edition of the Hunger Games with children from the Capitol as tributes. While recovering from the same explosion that killed her sister, Katniss happens across President Snow, who is under house arrest and awaiting execution. Snow tells her that he did not order the assault that killed Prim, and that he would have escaped if he had had access to a hover plane. Instead, he accuses Coin of being behind the bombing. When Katniss expresses her doubts about his innocence, Snow reminds her that they had agreed not to lie to each other following the 74th Hunger Games. He also explains that the bombing of the children would have served no purpose for him, as it turned the remaining Capitol citizens against him.
Shortly thereafter, Katniss recalls that the bombing resembled a trap originally developed by Gale Hawthorne. Gale denies being involved, but Katniss cannot repress her suspicions. At Snow's execution, Katniss thinks back to her conversation with him, and realizes that someone high up would have had to have given permission for Prim to be on the front lines despite her young age. Making it look like the Capitol killed Prim would push Katniss's loyalty to Coin and would also drive a wedge between the Capitol and President Snow. When she is given the opportunity to execute Snow, Katniss makes her decision, raises her bow and shoots Coin instead, killing her. A riot ensues and Snow is found dead. Katniss attempts to consume the suicide pill on her uniform, but Peeta stops her. Katniss is acquitted of Coin's murder due to her apparent insanity and sent home to the ruins of District 12, along with others who are attempting to rebuild. Peeta returns months later, having largely recovered from his brainwashing. Katniss again falls in love with Peeta, recognizing she needs his hope and strength, in contrast to Gale who has the same fire she already finds in herself. Together with Haymitch, they write a book filled with the stories of previous tributes of the Hunger Games and those who died in the war to preserve their memory.
Twenty years later, Katniss and Peeta are married and have two children. The Hunger Games are over, but Katniss dreads the day her children learn about their parents' involvement in both the Games and the war. When she feels distressed, Katniss plays a comforting but repetitive "game," reminding herself of every good thing she has ever seen someone do. The novel ends with Katniss stating that "there are much worse games to play."

Catching Fire: Suzanne Collins

The Catching Fire movie will be officially released on November 22, 2013. The Hunger Games is a 2008 science fiction novel by American writer Suzanne Collins. It is written in the voice of 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem, where the countries of North America once existed.
After winning the 74th Hunger Games in the previous novel, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return home to District 12, the poorest sector in the country ofPanem. On the day that Katniss and Peeta are to start a "Victory Tour" of the country, she is visited by President Snow, who explains that he is angry with her for breaking the rules at the end of the last Hunger Games, which permitted both Peeta and Katniss to win. Snow tells Katniss that when she defied the Capitol, she inspired rebellion in the districts.
The first stop on the Victory Tour is District 11, the home of Katniss's deceased friend and ally in the Hunger Games, Rue. During the ceremony, Katniss delivers a brief speech to the people of District 11, thanking them for their participants in the Games. When she is done, an old man whistles the tune that Katniss used in the arena to tell Rue that she was safe. The song acts as a signal and everyone salutes Katniss, using the same gesture that she used to say farewell to Rue. Leaving District 11, Katniss and Peeta proceed to travel to all of the twelve districts and the Capitol. During an interview, Peeta proposes to Katniss publicly, hoping to settle the dispute between Katniss and President Snow and placate the growing rebellion. Despite this, Katniss learns that their attempts of subduing revolt in the districts have failed.
Shortly after returning to District 12, Katniss encounters two runaways from District 8. They explain their theory that District 13 was not wiped out by the Capitol, contrary to what the other districts have been led to believe, and that many of its residents survive in underground shelters. Later, it is announced that, for the 75th Hunger Games, 24 victors from previous years will be forced to compete once again. This is the third occurrence of the "Quarter Quell": an event that occurs every 25th year of the Games and allows the Capitol to introduce a twist. Knowing that she and Peeta will both be competing in the Games a second time, Katniss decides that she will devote herself to ensuring that Peeta becomes the Quarter Quell's victor. However, Peeta is devoted to protecting her.
During the Games, set in a jungle with a saltwater lake, Katniss and Peeta join up with two other previous victors: Finnick Odair, a 24-year-old man who survived the Games at the age of 14, and Mags, Finnick's 80-year-old mentor, both from District 4. After Mags's death, Katniss, Peeta and Finnick join forces with Johanna Mason, a sarcastic and often cruel victor from District 7, and Beetee and Wiress, an older couple from District 3 who are said to be "exceptionally smart". Wiress soon proves her genius by revealing to Katniss that the arena is arranged like a clock, with all of the arena's disasters occurring on a timed chart. After Wiress is killed, Katniss learns of Beetee's plan to harness lightning in order to electrocute two other contenders. In the final chapters, Katniss directs the lightning at the force field that contains the arena, thereby destroying the arena and resulting in her temporary paralysis.
When Katniss wakes up, she is being transported to District 13, joined by Finnick, Beetee, and her mentor, Haymitch Abernathy. She learns that Peeta and Johanna have been captured by the Capitol, and is informed that there had been a plan among most of the contestants to break out of the arena—Beetee had been attempting to destroy the force field in the same way that she did. The book ends when Katniss's best friend, Gale, comes to visit her and informs her that, though he got her family out in time, District 12 has been bombed and destroyed.

The Hunger Games: Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games: Suzanne Collins 2012
The Hunger Games takes place in a nation known as Panem, established in North America after the destruction of the continent's civilization by an unknown apocalyptic event. The nation consists of the wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding, poorer districts united under the Capitol's control. District 12, where the book begins, is located in the coal-rich region that was formerly known as Appalachia.
As punishment for a past rebellion against the Capitol, in which a 13th district was destroyed, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by an annual lottery to participate in the Hunger Games, an event in which the participants (or "tributes") must fight to the death in an outdoor arena controlled by the Capitol, until only one individual remains. The story is narrated by 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 who volunteers for the 74th annual Hunger Games in place of her younger sister, Primrose. The male tribute chosen from District 12 is Peeta Mellark, a former schoolmate of Katniss who once gave her bread from his family's bakery when her family was starving.
Katniss and Peeta are taken to the Capitol, where their drunken mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, victor of the 50th Hunger Games, instructs them to watch and determine the strengths and weaknesses of the other tributes. "Stylists" are employed to make each tribute look his or her best; Katniss's stylist, Cinna, is the only person at the Capitol with whom she feels a degree of understanding. The tributes are publicly displayed to the Capitol audience in an interview with television host Caesar Flickerman, and have to attempt to appeal to the television audience in order to obtain "sponsors". During this time, Peeta reveals on-air his longtime unrequited love for Katniss. Katniss believes this to be a ploy to gain sponsors, who can be critical to survival because of their ability to send gifts such as food, medicine, and tools to favored tributes during the Games.
While nearly half the tributes are killed in the first day of the Games, Katniss relies on her well-practiced hunting and survival skills to remain unharmed and concealed from the other tributes. A few days into the games, Katniss develops an alliance with Rue, a 12-year-old girl from the agricultural District 11 who reminds Katniss of her own sister. In the meantime, Peeta appears to have joined forces with the tributes from the richer districts. However, when he has the opportunity to kill Katniss, he instead saves her from the others. Katniss's alliance with Rue is brought to an abrupt end when Rue is killed by another tribute, whom Katniss then kills with an arrow. Katniss sings to Rue until she dies, and spreads flowers over her body as a sign of respect for Rue and disgust towards the Capitol.
Apparently because of Katniss and Peeta's image in the minds of the audience as "star-crossed lovers", a rule change is announced midway through the Games, allowing two tributes from the same district to win the Hunger Games as a couple. Upon hearing this, Katniss begins searching for Peeta. She eventually finds him, wounded and in hiding. As she nurses him back to health, she acts the part of a young girl falling in love to gain more favor with the audience and, consequently, gifts from her sponsors. When the couple remain as the last two surviving tributes, the Gamemakers reverse the rule change in an attempt to force them into a dramatic finale, where one must kill the other to win. Katniss, knowing that the Gamemakers would rather have two victors than none, retrieves highly poisonous berries known as "nightlock" from her pouch and offers some to Peeta. Realizing that Katniss and Peeta intend to commit suicide, the Gamemakers announce that both will be the victors of the 74th Hunger Games.
Although she survives the ordeal in the arena and is treated to a hero's welcome in the Capitol, Katniss is warned by Haymitch that she has now become a political target after defying her society's authoritarian leaders so publicly. Afterwards, Peeta is heartbroken when he learns that Katniss's actions in the arena were part of a calculated ploy to earn sympathy from the audience. However, Katniss is unsure of her own feelings and realizes that she is dreading the moment when she and Peeta will go their separate ways.

The Kane Family

Sadie:

Twelve-year-old Sadie Kane was separated from her brother after their mother’s death. Following a huge court battle, Sadie’s maternal grandparents won custody of her from her father Julius, so while Carter and Julius traveled the world, Sadie was raised as a British schoolgirl in London. Sadie tends to speak her mind, even if it gets her in trouble. She has little interest in schoolwork or Egyptian history, but she soon finds out that Egyptian history has an interest in her. Will she manage to defeat the gods of Egypt, or will she and her brother strangle each other first? The jury is still out on that question.

Carter:

Fourteen-year-old Carter Kane is the son of Julius and Ruby. After his mother’s death, Carter traveled the world with his father, so he has not known a permanent home in years, nor has he ever been in a regular school. His father has home schooled him, so Carter knows a lot about Egypt, but has never experienced the joys of cafeteria food or dressing out for P.E. Poor kid! Carter doesn’t consider himself brave, but he will soon need a lot of bravery. The sword he wields is known as a khopesh, and was used by the pharaoh’s personal guard. Whether or not Carter can use it in combat, we’ll soon see...

Julius:

Dr. Julius Kane is one of the preeminent Egyptologists of modern times, specializing in Egyptian magic. He has written numerous books, and travels the world doing research and giving lectures. However, Julius Kane has a secret. It may be that he is able to read those ancient Egyptian spell books because Julius Kane has firsthand experience with magic. Unfortunately, Dr. Julius Kane has a number of enemies – some magicians, some not even human.

Ruby:

Carter and Sadie’s mother Ruby was a British anthropologist who specialized in ancient DNA. She died in a mysterious accident when the children were very young, but their father has never told them the truth about why or how she died. The truth may be worse than Carter or Sadie imagine, but the siblings will have to learn their mother’s secret if they are to stay alive.

Amos:

Julius’s brother Amos has kept his distance from Carter and Sadie, but not because he wanted to. When a terrible accident occurs, Uncle Amos must step in and help the children, taking them to the family mansion in Brooklyn. It will be up to Amos to explain the truth, and introduce Carter and Sadie to the dangerous magical heritage of the Kane family.

Gran and Gramps:

Sadie and Carter’s maternal grandparents live in a simple flat near Canary Wharf in London. They don’t seem very magical. Gramps is a former rugby player and Gran is a quiet woman who makes terrible biscuits. However, their family has a long lineage that stretches back to Egyptian times, and is almost as powerful as the Kane family. Carter and Sadie soon learn that they have inherited power, and trouble, from both of their parents’ families.

Kane Chronicles: Book 3: The Serpent's Shadow

The Serpent's Shadow: Rick Riordan: 2012
Carter and Sadie, the main characters, travel to Dallas, Texas the 51st nome, with their initiates, and meet J.D. Grissom, the leader of the nome. They tell him that they need a heavily guarded magic scroll from the King Tut exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art within three days. Sadie sees a face in the wall, which tells that they will not understand the scroll and they instead need a golden box. However, the nome is attacked, and the scroll is destroyed. They discover that the entire 51st nome has been destroyed. At the 21st nome in Brooklyn, they discover that the box is a shadow box, and it holds the shadow of King Tut.
Horus visits Carter. Carter suspects that there is a better way to execrate Apophis and decides to consult Thoth. Sadie gets an idea about using Bes's sheut to give him back his ren.
The Russian magician they met last year, Leonid, comes with bad news. Sadie takes him to the First Nome to meet Uncle Amos. He tells them that the rebels, led by Sarah Jacobi and Kwai, have teamed up with Apophis. Amos tells Zia and Sadie to visit Bes. Meanwhile, Carter and Walt go visit Thoth. Thoth is being attacked by demons. Walt and Carter repulse them, and Thoth helps them understand who Setne is and reveals that he can help them get Apophis' sheut and destroy him. They realize they have to visit the Land of the Dead at his trial and persuade Osiris to help them.
When Zia and Sadie are visiting the House of Rest, Sadie realizes that Amos is calling on the Path of Set, who he once hosted. Tawaret tells them where Bes once hid his sheut. Carter, Sadie, Zia, and Walt meet and exchange information. They meet Osiris and persuade him to let Setne go with them. Sadie and Walt go to look for Bes's sheut, while Zia and Carter go with Setne to find The Book of Thoth.
They go to the serapeum of Apis, and later Setne tricks them by giving orders to Bloodstained Blade to kill them. However, they survive both tricks and Zia kills Bloodstained Blade. Meanwhile Sadie and Walt visit the goddess Neith, who tells them she will help them if they can survive her hunt till sunset. They survive by using their shen amulets to split up and transfer to each other's side, and then in the end right before sunset Sadie tricks Neith by mesmerizing her with tales of hunting Jelly Babies and etc. Walt uses the rest of his energy to revive Bes's sheut, and then he survives by becoming the host of Anubis.
He realizes Setne's plan and tells Sadie to go help Carter and Zia and sends her to them. Meanwhile they enter the Land of the Demons, and Carter and Zia kiss. Carter realizes that Zia is channeling the power of Ra. They find the sheut and Setne binds them by turning the glamour charm used to disguise them into bindings. Sadie comes to help and they bind Apophis's shadow to the statue. The shadow calls out to all forces of Chaos, and they arrive. While Carter and Zia are battling the demons, Setne makes his escape.
Tawaret arrives with the gods from the Fourth House, including a restored Bes and saves them. When they return to the mortal world, the Brooklyn House is at the First Nome, helping Amos and the others protect it. Ra is reborn with Zia as his host and is not senile anymore. The other gods come to help them, while Ra gives Carter the pharaoh's throne. He orders the other gods to help. They enter the First Nome to help protect Amos against the rebels. Together they defeat the rebels and Walt and Anubis kill Jacobi and Kwai. When the rest of the rebels realize they are being used, they switch sides to good and accept the leadership of Carter and Amos. During the battle that follows, Apophis eats Ra, and then Sadie and Carter execrate his shadow, finally destroying him. Apophis regurgitates Ra before he dies, but as a result, Ra and the rest of the gods except Anubis must retreat from the world for a time.
Carter and Sadie go to see their father to report Setne's escape. Their father is just happy that they're alive and succeeded in saving the world. Sadie talks to her mother who asks her to be careful because her gift of prophecy has shown her visions of "other gods" and "rival magic". And there is also the fact that Setne will have to be dealt with sooner or later too.
Carter takes Zia out on a date in the Mall of America. She tells him that she will be staying in Brooklyn House. They share a passionate kiss and start a relationship. Meanwhile, Bes and Tawaret finally get together after many centuries. Walt, now the host of Anubis, dances with Sadie and the pair also have a romantic kiss, with Sadie finally able to be with both guys she loves without having to choose.
The book ends with an invitation to anyone with pharaoh's blood to join the House of Life. Sadie also mentions having to check out "unexplained magic" in Long Island.

Kane Chronicles: Book 2: The Throne of Fire

The Throne of Fire: Rick Riordan: 2009

Ever since the gods of Ancient Egypt were unleashed in the modern world, Carter Kane and his sister Sadie have been in trouble. As descendants of the House of Life, the Kanes have some powers at their command, but the devious gods have not given them much time to master their skills at Brooklyn House, which has become a training ground for young magicians. The other branches of the House of Life are hunting the Kane family down once they left the safety of their branch, the Brooklyn House. And now their most threatening enemy yet—the chaos serpent Apophis is rising. If they do not prevent him from breaking free in a few days' time, the world will come to an end.
The story begins with Carter and Sadie breaking in to the Brooklyn Museum during a wedding to search for a part of the Book of Ra, which will allow them to wake up Ra to help them imprison or kill Apophis, the lord of chaos. Along with them are Khufu the baboon, and their new trainees, Jaz and Walt. Instead, they find a papyrus scroll that is booby trapped with a series of fire traps. As Carter and Walt distract the demons that are a part of the booby trap, Jaz performs a spell that banishes the demons back to the Duat, but Jaz ends up falling into a coma. Before she does, she manages to hand Sadie a wax statue to heal Carter. Sadie escapes from the museum with the scroll before the police arrive. When they arrive back in the mansion, Carter explains to the new trainees that they must find Ra, the sun god, before Apophis wakes in four days and swallows the sun as well as all of existence. They also find out that to do this, they must find the three scrolls that control the embodiments of Ra, one of them being the scroll that Sadie found in the museum. However, new enemies await, such as (Menshikov) who serves Apophis and holds one of the key scrolls in freeing Ra.
Sadie returns to London to celebrate her 12th birthday, but when she arrives, her grandparents have been forced to host Nekhbet, the vulture goddess, and Babi, the baboon god, and hunt down Sadie and her friends, Liz and Emma. While escaping the two gods she has a short conversation with Anubis. There she is given directions as to where she has to go next, a netjeri knife and they head off to their next destination. They are then rescued by the dwarf god Bes, who is able to use his extreme ugliness as a weapon. They meet up with Carter and Walt along the way. When Bes opens a portal, he insists for Walt to get out for reasons Sadie and Carter do not know. They teleport to the Eighteenth Nome, in St. Petersburg, Russia, which is Menshikov's home. They get inside Menshikov's headquarters, and find out that he is summoning Set. They get the scroll but are attacked by Menshikov's two-headed snake (tjesu heru). Sadie manages to destroy the snake, but not before it bites Carter. Set tells them the location of the last scroll and also the location of the real Zia, in exchange for his "secret name". After Sadie agrees to give Set back his secret name, she still remembers his secret name, which is "Evil Day", but doesn't know how to use it. After Sadie heals Carter with the statue by using his secret name, Sadie calls on Walt to help her with the scroll, while Bes and Carter go to find Zia.
Carter and Bes find some men to take them to The Place of Red Sands, Zia's birthplace and where she is hidden. Nephthys, who is using Zia as a host, leaves Zia, but Mehsikov and Micheal Desjardins arrive. Carter finds the weapons of Ra, the crook and flail, and uses it to defeat Menshikov, but Menshikov attempts to curse him while Bes is trapped in a cage. Meanwhile, Sadie and Walt arrive at the Valley of the Golden Mummies, meeting a Roman ghost called Appius Claudius Iratus (Mad Claude), who wants them to get the mummies' spirit to the Afterlife, as the rites were not done properly. When they cannot, Mad Claude gets angry and calls on the other mummies to kill them. Sadie manages to find the last scroll, but they get trapped by mummies. Ptah, a god, sends rats to help them and creates a portal to Carter and Bes. The portal destroys Bes' cage, and he scares them away. It turns out Walt is cursed and will die young, which was why Bes sent him away. Menshikov is preparing an army to attack Brooklyn House, so Walt and Zia go back to protect it, while Sadie, Bes, and Carter go into the Duat to free Ra and defeat Apophis.
In the Egyptian version of the underworld, the Duat, there are 12 Houses, each representing an hour of the night. At the Gates of the Fourth House (Can only be entered before 4 O'clock), they find Khnum, the first part of Ra, who has forgotten what his secret name is. Using the Book of Ra, Sadie reads out his secret name, returning his essence to the scroll. They enter the Fourth House. With the help of Tawaret, who has history with Bes, and it takes them four hours to find Ra, who is senile. Ra acts like a madman, throwing ice cream bananas into the air, and talking about weasels and zebras. Because the Eighth House can only be entered at 8 O'clock, they travel to the Seventh House, where Osiris, who is being hosted by their dad, and the ghost of their mom await them. They invite Khonsu, the moon god, who can add more time into the night, but they have to gamble for it. If they lose a round, their identity (Ren) will be consumed. They will have no memories. They have to win 3 rounds of senet. They win the first round, but lose the second, causing Bes' identity to be lost. They win the last two, and with the extra time, they get into the Gates of the Eighth House and travel towards the Twelfth House. Menshikov is there, possessed by Apophis. They get Ra to merge with his last aspect, Khepri the scarab god, but free Apophis (they must in order to get Khepri). Desjarins witnesses this and helps them banish Apophis, but combusts from using too much magic. He warns them that Apophis will return in time.
They return to Brooklyn House and find out that because of the power of Ra, they were able to hold the enemies and win the fight. However, the gods are not happy with them, especially Horus and Isis, because bringing back Ra has caused Horus to lose his throne. Walt is dying in a year unless they can find a cure, which is lost, because Menshikov was the last person to know it. Bes is sitting in the Fourth House, not having any memories, not knowing who and where he is. Apophis will return, and Ra is in no shape to fight him. The House of Life is still trying to crush them, as they think that Desjardins died by the hands of the Kanes, and Amos is the new Chief Lector. In the end, Sadie is left with nothing but a crush on both a person who is about to die, and a 5000 year old god.

Kane Chronicles : Book 1 : The Red Pyramid

The Red Pyramid: Rick Riordan: 2009
The book is written as a recording made by the Kane siblings, Carter and Sadie. The story begins when Carter Kane and his father, Julius Kane, go to London to visit Sadie, Carter's sister who lives separately from them. Julius takes them to the British Museum to "study" the Rosetta Stone. But he actually has deeper motives and tries to summon Osiris, the Egyptian god of the Underworld by using the stone as an anchor. It goes wrong when all the other four major gods are brought out and Set, the Egyptian god of madness and chaos, imprisons Julius (he is now a host of Osiris) in a coffin.
Carter and Sadie were taken to Brooklyn by their uncle, Amos. He goes to find Set, leaving the two near-stranger siblings alone with a baboon called Khufu. In the library of the Brooklyn mansion, they begin to discover signs that they are descended from famous pharaohs. Julius's side of the family was descended from Narmer while their dead mother, Ruby, had a family originated from Ramesses the Great. The term is Blood of the Pharaohs. When Sadie and Carter reach New York it is discussed how in Egypt people lived on the East side of the river because the sun rose in the east, and buried their dead in the west. Sadie had asked why they couldn't live in Manhattan. Amos replied that there are other gods and they should stay separate. This is a link between this book and the Percy Jackson Series.
The mansion is attacked by serpent leopards, also known as serpopards. Sadie's cat, Muffin, turns out be the cat goddess, Bast. She makes quick work of the serpopards but the three are forced to run when the carriers tail them. They go into Manhattan, which Amos had earlier said had other non-Egyptian gods. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Bast attempts to have them go in the Duat – a magical realm right underneath the mortal realm. But the goddess of scorpions, Serqet, fights Bast and, almost defeated, Bast fled to the Duat.
In the museum, Carter and Sadie find Zia Rashid. She is the scribe of the First Nome, the main nome of the House of Life, that had magicians trying to protect people and fight gods. Carter develops a massive crush on Zia in the book. Zia combats Serqet and bans her from her host by using the Seven Ribbons of Hathor spell, but it doesn't work.
Zia takes the two to the First Nome, where Chief Lector Iskandar – the House of Life leader – and Desjardins – the second-in-command – brought up the assumption that they were both hosts of gods. Sadie and Iskander have a talk and the old Chief Lector tells her about the hosts. They were mortals who the gods inhabited so they could leave the Duat and be in the mortal realm.
The next day, the two siblings begin their training. Zia teaches them the concept of casting hieroglyphs to use magic. Carter surprises Sadie and Zia by summoning a combat avatar – it is a magic and Bast used it to fight Serqet – of Horus, the falcon, war god. But their training is disrupted when a magician informs Zia that Iskander is dead and Desjardins is next in line for the throne. Sadie creates a portal and she and Carter escape to Paris because Desjardins would want to kill them because they are hosts, but not before bringing sphinxes with them. Bast, who is fine, takes care of them and Carter and Sadie infiltrate Desjardins' house so they can take a book to fight Set. Fruit bats attack them when they find the book, and magicians follow them when they run. Carter, Sadie, and Bast run to the Louvre and transport to the U.S., but since Sadie is not specific they travel to the Washington Monument.
At Washington, D.C they are chased by the Set animal, who Carter named Leroy. Carter stays back at the airport to fight it and manages to wound it with his combat avatar. He throws Leroy in his Duat locker - a short opening to the Duat - and manages to catch the airplane to Memphis, Tennessee, where the wisdom god, Thoth, is. They use tickets given to Sadie by Nut, the sky goddess, while she dreamed back in the Washington Monument.
When they finish Thoth's test, they learn that they were supposed to have the Feather of Truth from the Underworld/Land of the Dead. And they also needed Set's true name, which contained the person's identity and life. Because of Sadie's attraction to Anubis-god of funerals-he gives the Feather of Truth to her. They then continue from New Orleans to Texas, where Carter fights Sobek, but is hopelessly outmatched and outclassed even with the combat avatar. Amos saves them but Bast and Sobek are expelled to the Duat. The only thing left of Bast is Muffin, the cat she inhabited.
They go to New Mexico, as Zia wanted Carter there and the earth god Geb told Sadie to. It turns out that Desjardins had known this and a fight occurs. Thanks to Zia's plan, they defeat Sekhmet, the lion goddess of battle, and drive onwards to Arizona. They spot the Red Pyramid, which is Set's main host. When they arrive, Amos collapses and Set reveals he was hosting Amos as well, all along.
Carter merges completely with Horus and becomes the eye of the war god. He puts up a good fight but Set's strength grows when dawn approaches and the desert glows. Sadie learns from a dying Zia that Set's secret name is Evil Day. She combines with Isis, the magic goddess inside her, and transports Carter and Sadie along with herself to Washington, D.C. Sadie banishes Set to the Duat, reading the book and using the Feather of Truth along with his secret name.
Just then, Set's serpent appears. He is the host of Apophis, the Serpent of Chaos itself. Even though Carter kills the serpent, it is Sadie who rubs the picture of the snake in the sky. They come back for Zia, who turns out to be a shabti-a ceramic doll-and urges Carter to find the real Zia Rashid.
They return to Brooklyn House and rebuild the place with magic. Amos leaves for the First Nome to be healed from being possessed by Set. Carter and Sadie are paid a visit by Osiris, who was bonded with their father. They even see the ghost of their mother who was accompanying Julius. The god of the dead gives them his djed amulet to attract other things. The siblings give up Horus and Isis, who vanish away into the Duat but not before preserving a quarter of their power in the amulets Julius had given them a long time ago. Carter and Sadie store the amulets in Carter's Duat locker and put the djed amulet with it. Once kids began to come, they would teach them divine magic or the path of the gods, which involved channeling a god's power. In the end, Carter and Sadie find their father. Julius decides that he would like to stay with his wife; Carter and Sadie now live with their uncle Amos.
